Tactical urbanism can also involve creative placemaking. Creative placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability, and brings a range of people together to celebrate, motivate, and be inspired, while promoting public safety for all. This magic happens when communities partner together to strategically shape the physical and social character of a shared area around the creative potential already present.
Tactical urbanism is a “do-it-yourself/ourselves (DIY/DIO)” approach to creative placemaking and neighborhood design. Anyone can make use of this method - involved students, a solo leader, close neighbors - to enhance overlooked spaces, address neighborhood issues, or highlight critical areas for improvement within a common space.
Tactical urbanism typically employs:
- local ideas for local planning challenges
- short-term, low-cost, scalable interventions with realistic expectations
- the development of social capital between citizens and building of organizational capacity between public and private institutions
Livable Memphis utilizes tactical urbanism in their larger projects including MEMFix, our ioby partnership, and The Hampline by incorporating creative placemaking pieces and working alongside other community groups to improve quality of life for all. Check out this article, here, in which two of our own present the importance of tactical urbanism.
